Summary

Title: National Fishery-Independent Survey Science Coordinator

Home Organization: NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology

In his role as the National Fishery-Independent Survey Science Coordinator for NOAA Fisheries, Derek aims to optimize fishery-independent survey (i.e., standardized field data acquisition) resources through strategic planning, facilitating coordination between programs, and supporting the implementation of next-generation estimation and sampling methods. Derek is generally interested in understanding variation in marine fish distribution, community structure, and growth. Given his position in NOAA Fisheries, he is particularly interested in how sampling designs and methods affect inferences we make on the above. Most of his current research focuses on developing metrics and strategies for survey prioritization, understanding the impact of alterations to survey effort, scale, and breadth on downstream products like stock assessments, and determining how to use that information to reduce total uncertainty across programs with a diverse set of objectives.
