William & Mary’s Batten School & VIMS are unique among coastal and marine science institutions. As a state agency, VIMS has a legal mandate to provide research, education and advisory service to government, citizens and industry. In the Batten School, graduate and undergraduate students have an unparalleled opportunity to conduct research that matters. Research at the Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences & VIMS extends from inland watersheds to the open ocean, with an emphasis on coastal and estuarine science.
Leadership & Administration
The Dean of William & Mary's Batten School and Director of VIMS collaborates with, and is supported by, the other members of the Cabinet who assist the Dean & Director in providing the vision, strategic planning and overall leadership for the Institute as a center of excellence in coastal and marine research, education and advisory service. They also assist in faculty and staff recruitment, development, evaluation and retention; in promoting inclusive excellence and belonging among faculty, staff and students; and in creating a sense of community throughout the Batten School & VIMS.
Facilities & Services
As one of the largest marine science centers in the U.S., the Batten School & VIMS maintains a comprehensive suite of research and educational facilities, state-of-the-art analytical instruments and field equipment and a fleet of both large and small research vessels.
