About
I am a biologist and parasitologist studying disease in marine systems. My program, the Batten School & VIMS Shellfish Pathology Lab, conducts research on three primary tracks: the evolutionary ecology of parasitic diseases of oysters, the diversity and distribution of marine parasites, and the etiology of enigmatic mortality syndromes such as “summer mortality” or “sudden unusual mortality syndrome” in bivalve molluscs. Applying both microscopic and molecular genetic approaches in our work, we are an important US diagnostic lab for shellfish pathogens, and collaborate with colleagues nationally and around the world on shellfish health management in aquaculture, fisheries, and restoration.
Prior to arriving at the Batten School & VIMS, I was a Visiting Fellow with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, working in shellfish pathology and parasitology; and a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Medical University of South Carolina applying protein mass spectrometry to understand shrimp proteomic responses to white spot syndrome virus.
