Multidisciplinary Research Sections

William & Mary's Batten School & VIMS lead science for solutions to address global change across three multidisciplinary sections: Natural Resources, Coastal & Ocean Processes and Ecosystem Health.

Multidisciplinary Sections

  • Natural Resources

Providing translational science for sustainable management of coastal socio-ecological systems, especially fisheries and aquaculture.

  • Coastal & Ocean Processes

Connecting global trends and local drivers to understand and address environmental change.

  • Ecosystem Health

Connecting physical, chemical, biological and socioeconomic systems to address environmental and community vulnerabilities.

Centers, Programs & Labs

A wide range of research centers, programs, laboratory groups and partnerships to address immediate and long-term issues in coastal and marine sciences are housed within our sections. All share the common goals of providing superior research capabilities in coastal and marine sciences in collaboration with industry and governmental agencies. They support undergraduate and graduate student education and enhance rapid technology transfer from the Batten School & VIMS to commercial groups, coastal managers and decisionmakers within Virginia and beyond.

Strategic Plan

Through our innovative strategic plan, we are committed to the development of resilient systems through a focus on the three grand challenges around which our sections are structured. We are committed to ensuring science for the stewardship of ecosystem health, natural resources and coastal and ocean processes. We strive to create an innovative organizational design that catalyzes interdisciplinarity, provides flexibility for responding to emerging challenges and supports excellence in research and discovery around these core focus areas.
