I. Scope

This policy and procedure document (PPD) applies to all faculty positions with a primary appointment within William & Mary’s (W&M) Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences (Batten School) & Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).

II. Purpose & Policy Statement

The Batten School & VIMS are internationally recognized centers for coastal & marine research and education with a unique advisory service role within and outside of the state. One of our greatest strengths is a faculty with varying profiles that participates in and fulfills our tripartite mission and upholds our standards of excellence in research, education, and advisory work. To meet our mission and needs we employ faculty under a variety of classifications as allowed and defined in W&M’s Faculty Handbook.

This PPD defines the faculty appointments utilized at the Batten School & VIMS and outlines the local PPDs that apply to each type of appointment. All faculty appointments at the Batten School & VIMS must align with W&M’s Faculty Handbook and associated William & Mary and Batten School & VIMS policies and procedures.

III. Definitions

Faculty are defined in the Faculty Handbook Section III.
Tenured and Tenure-Eligible (TTE) faculty are defined in the Faculty Handbook Section III.B.1.a. Approved titles for TTE faculty are outlined in Section III.B.2.a of the Faculty Handbook.
Non-Tenure Eligible (NTE) Faculty are defined in the Faculty Handbook Section III.B.b. There are four types of NTE faculty appointments, each defined in the Handbook.
- Full-time NTE Faculty – Approved titles for this type of NTE faculty appointment are provided in Section III.B.2.b. of the Faculty Handbook. At the Batten School & VIMS we typically use the “Research” and “Teaching” modifiers.
- Visiting NTE Faculty – The approved title for this type of faculty appointment is described in Section III.B.2.b of the Faculty Handbook.
- Part-Time NTE Faculty – The approved title for this type of faculty appointment is Adjunct Professor (per Faculty Handbook Section III.B.2.b.)
- Post-doctoral Fellows - The approved title for this type of faculty appointment is Post-doctoral Fellow (per Faculty Handbook Section III.B.2.b.)
Emeritus Faculty are defined in the Faculty Handbook Section III.B.3.d
