Microplastics Sampling Protocol

Microbial and microplastic sampling      

• Record - time and speed or walking along boat 5 minutes
• Tow 180 micron net
• Wash down through the #120 4" sieve
• Scrape sieve and transfer to 5ml glass vials - label location & date
• Wash spatula and sieve dry in sun

 Plastic water column sample        

• 1 liter dark bottle - rinse 3 times
• Fill to the top and label seal with electrical tape - location & date

 Beach plastic sampling      

• Collect 3- one gallon buckets of beach sand (top ~1' of sand)
• Sieve through large 1 mm sieve
• Put in zip lock baggie and label - location & date
