Degree-Seeking Graduate Students
Students should discuss their course plan with their advisor(s) or the MA Program Director prior to registration. Students register for classes in PATH during their priority or advanced registration window.
Full time enrollment is a minimum of (9) credit hours each fall and spring and (3) credit hours during the summer.
Research Graduate (RG) Student Status: Students enroll full-time each semester, however, the billable credit hours are adjusted by the Batten School & VIMS Graduate Registrar to reflect part-time tuition after students register for classes. If changes are made to course registration, students must notify the registrar in order for tuition to be billed at the part-time rate.
Employee Educational Assistance: Degree-seeking students who are also VIMS and William & Mary employees should initiate a tuition waiver (if eligible) through DocuSign after they are registered for classes. This form is accessible through the Banner employee tab at myW&M. The form will route automatically to the W&M Bursar’s Office for processing.
Refer to the registration requirements listed in the Batten School & VIMS Graduate Catalog for additional information, including requirements for RG status and part-time student status. MA | MS | PhD
Each term, complete the Batten School & VIMS non-degree-seeking application for graduate students and an application for in-state tuition privileges to determine physical Virginia residency. The course instructor(s) must sign the NDS application, granting the student permission to enroll in the class. Note: Registration in a course is contingent on seat availability, with priority given to graduate, degree-seeking students first.
The Batten School & VIMS Graduate Registrar will administratively register non-degree-seeking students in classes and send a registration confirmation email which provides login information for a student account and access to our course management system.
Employee Educational Assistance: Employees of Batten School & VIMS and William & Mary should also initiate a tuition waiver (if eligible) through DocuSign after they are registered for classes. This form is accessible through the Banner employee tab at myW&M. The form will route automatically to the W&M Bursar’s Office for processing.
Students may enroll in a graduate course at William & Mary, outside of the Marine Science (MSCI) subject area, with the assistance of the Batten School & VIMS Graduate Registrar. Students must initiate a change in registration form which requires approval from their Batten School & VIMS academic advisor, the W&M course instructor, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Batten School & VIMS Graduate Registrar will process the registration in Banner, move the W&M course(s) over to the graduate marine science level transcript and update DegreeWorks after registration.
Note: Coursework that is not being used to meet Batten School & VIMS degree program requirements and overload coursework are not covered by an assistantship award unless you have the permission of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Old Dominion University Cross-Registration for Graduate Students
A limited number of graduate students who are enrolled in the Batten School & VIMS, with their advisors’ and dean’s approval, are permitted to take elective courses in the College of Sciences and/or the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University and vice versa. Core curriculum requirements for the particular degree program must be taken at the home institution with no substitutions from the partner institution permitted. The tuition and fees are determined and retained by the graduate student’s home institution.
Registration Process for Batten School & VIMS Graduate Students: Students complete the cross-registration agreement and attach catalog course descriptions and syllabi as supporting documentation. Form is approved by the host institution course instructor and the student's academic advisor(s) before submitting to the Batten School & VIMS Graduate Registrar. Once the course level is determined and approval to enroll is granted by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Batten School& VIMS Graduate Registrar will create a “dummy” special topics course (MSCI 548 or MSCI 698) on the course schedule for enrollment and transcript purposes. The tuition for the course is billed through Batten School & VIMS. Upon approval, the Batten School & VIMS Registrar also sends the cross-registration form to the ODU Cross-Registration Office so students can be registered for the course at the host institution. At the end of the term, the ODU Cross-Registration Office sends the Batten School & VIMS Registrar the final grade(s) to be entered into Banner by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Keep in mind, students need to be aware of course start and end dates at ODU and adhere to the ODU and Batten School & VIMS add/drop/withdraw deadlines in case any registration changes need to be made.
Take advantage of a wider variety of course offerings to fulfill program requirements.
Did you know? Students are allowed to use non-Batten School & VIMS graduate level coursework taken internally through W&M or through cross-registration agreements with the Batten School & VIMS to fulfill up to 6 credits for the Master's degrees (MA, MS) and up to 9 credits for the PhD degree.
