Building the Knowledge Network

As the Moananuiākea voyage carries Hōkūleʻa across the Pacific, the Marine Advisory Program Education Team led by Education Specialist Celia Cackowski will assist PVS in connecting schools throughout the region in a shared journey of learning, discovery, and stewardship of the oceans. This initiative will build and sustain meaningful connections between ocean and coastal science and local communities—before, during, and long after the canoe departs each port. We will engage educators and local knowledge holders in each location through pre-port virtual coordination meetings, ensuring that learning is rooted in both Indigenous knowledge and contemporary science. These collaborative efforts will braid together diverse ways of knowing—cultural, ecological, scientific—into a lei of learning that links students and communities across the Pacific. At each port, students will engage with the voyage and be empowered to continue their own ocean and coastal observations and science activities after Hōkūleʻa sets sail again. Through an interactive website and an expanding educational network, classrooms will remain connected to the voyage and to one another, forming a living, growing community centered on advancing knowledge of the coasts and ocean.
