Following the Vision
About the Vision
“To ignite a movement of 10 million “planetary navigators” who will pursue critical and inspiring “voyages” to ensure a better future for the earth. We do so by developing young leaders and engaging communities around the world while amplifying the vital importance of our oceans, nature, science and indigenous wisdom.” (Moananuiākea – A Voyage for Earth)
A variety of factors have been found to influence the effectiveness of environmental communication, such as connecting issues to personal values and experiences, framing problems in the context of cultural and community norms, and providing tangible steps to enable action.
The Marine Economies & Social Systems Lab led by Professor Andrew Scheld and the Communities & Coasts Lab led by Professor Adriane Michaelis will use a mixed-mode approach, collecting qualitative and quantitative data on environmental beliefs, personal experiences, and interactions with Hōkūle'a crew and associated activities to understand factors that influence perceptions, attitudes, and willingness to effect positive environmental change.
